More about the Money Advice Unit

The Money Advice Unit is part of Wakefield District Citizens Advice Bureau. We receive funding from the Legal Services Commission and BIS (Financial Inclusion Fund) to provide free, independent, impartial and confidential debt advice to people on low incomes and benefit claimants within the Wakefield District area.

  • In 2008/2009 the Money Advice Unit dealt with just under £16 million of debt
  • In 2008/2009 we advised 1537 clients
  • The average debt per client for that period was £10,500

What are our aims?

In addition to the aims of the Citizens Advice, which the team fully support, our goal is to empower people in dealing with their personal finances and we strive to minimise the harmful effect of debt upon the individual by our intervention.

We also aim to increase awareness and understanding of debt issues amongst all those involved in the credit industry and to encourage good practice amongst credit providers through our social policy work.

Seeking help and advice

If you feel unable to deal with your debts on your own and you need to speak to someone who can offer help and assistance in a friendly and non-judgemental manner, then there are a number of organisations that you could contact, the CAB being just one of them.

We do not recommend that you go to any Debt Management Company that charges you for its service. All the information you need can be accessed free of charge from a number of organisations. After all any money you pay to a Debt Management Company for their services would be better spent on repaying your debt.
